There's a big market for a web designer whose whole positioning is: "I make online courses better." Focus on giving students progress.
I agree that "gated content" does not mean a good learning experience. ;) Here's what I want to improve: students actually making progress.

Of which aesthetics, ux a factor. But a minority compared to the learning experience, practice, feedback, and ultimately application.

Web has done to courses as it has done to music, videos etc. Anyone can now 'teach', but as a result lots of noise.
