Open protocols will, invariably, depend on centralized aggregators, networks, access points. Email needed Hotmail, Gmail. The web needed Yahoo, Google. Crypto needed Coinbase, Cash App. Podcasts needed iTunes, Spotify. RSS needed Google Reader.

Video is an example of a content type that never really had an open protocol. The result? Video is almost completely centralized on YouTube. Open protocols (email, RSS) give individual creators a lot more leverage because they have a direct connection with subscribers.

Up until now distribution and discovery have always needed to be centralized (Google search, YouTube,). Is there a way to achieve this in a decentralized way?
For example, is a decentralized, open, search engine truly possible?Pokaż ten wątek

The browser ecosystem is not a healthy one since there is a tilt towards Chromium based browsers, so there is a monopoly to one end of the spectrum Same to email cleients, the non-enterprise email hosting services are tilted towards a large centralized hosting providers

Browsers are interesting. It's monopolized by Chrome on one hand. And on the other, Safari is like the IE of 2000 - purposely slow to add new features because it'd sacrifice profits on proprietary software.

Unfortunately the “multiple providers” of podcasts are becoming increasingly closed. Spotify exclusive shows, subscriptions only available in Apple Podcasts, etc. Open apps like Overcast lose value because the big players make it impossible to use them for all shows.
