I don't believe it will be effective to try and stand in the way of products or services people value. You can encourage people to "pause," but they won't unless someone makes them. I find it better to focus on things within my locus of control.

Do you think disparate, un-targeted actions will be enough? I’m concerned about our individual propensity to self-rationalize our behavior, actions, positions. Feels like it needs to be collective action (the same collective action that helped us deal with CFCs and ozone)

A worthy concern! But I wonder who would decide what is worth it, and what isn't. Do we outlaw all fossil fuels? Eating meat? The internet? The US govt. is terrible at prioritizing the climate (as evidenced by the war machine, and more). I trust people over power.

I've also seen incredible changes in attitudes and behavior the govt had no part in that give me hope. Eating local, gay rights, black lives matter, and many more. I believe in being the change, and when enough people do, the government tends to hop in front of the parade.

I’m down for this. So I’m going to try to convince as many individuals as I can to stop investing in crypto until we figure out the ecological impacts.
(And hoping when there’s enough of us, the government brings in legislation that helps save the planet)1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 0 polubionych -

And I'll be supporting people who are trying to do crypto sustainably already, using renewables, excess energy, and so on. Many out there are doing this already.

How can crypto be done sustainably? (And what does that mean, exactly?)

Great question. For starters, it’s worth noting that an estimated 71% of Bitcoin mining is already done using renewables in areas where there is excess energy that simply isn’t being used.https://coinshares.com/research/bitcoin-mining-network-june-2019 …

I’m not sure a “Coinshares” report is a reputable, neutral source?https://www.vox.com/2019/6/18/18642645/bitcoin-energy-price-renewable-china …

So while I totally agree that it would be nice if BTC were more energy efficient, I also realize that we make sacrifices like this when our values allow. Like cars, the internet, and other developments - for me, the juice from btc is worth the squeeze.

We should take this chat to @TwitterSpaces (audio chat) sometime so we’re not talking past each other.

Agreed - it’s very hard with tricky issues that can go in multiple directions! Appreciate your earnest willingness to engage. I certainly have no intention to talk past you and assume you don’t either :)
