It seems to me that it’s easy to decry the impact of things you don’t utilize since doing so costs you nothing. There are huge environmental costs to almost all modern conveniences, and it seems to strange to single out crypto and force it to “pause” while letting others continue

Great question. For starters, it’s worth noting that an estimated 71% of Bitcoin mining is already done using renewables in areas where there is excess energy that simply isn’t being used.https://coinshares.com/research/bitcoin-mining-network-june-2019 …

It’s worth questioning the premise that the energy used to mine Bitcoin is “wasted.” This electricity goes to securing the network and processing transactions, and if we assume these are necessary features then comparing BTC’s electric use to the legacy system is worthwhile.

This belief that miners can always use energy that would otherwise be wasted is incorrect. https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(19)30087-X?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS254243511930087X%3Fshowall%3Dtrue …pic.twitter.com/pxNmB1zpTT

Also, if the energy used to mine Bitcoin doesn’t seem worth it to you, there are crypto currencies that use proof of stake instead of proof of work, which is less demanding energy wise. It’s not my cup of tea for various reasons but those alternatives are out there.

ETH has been trying to move to PoS for a long time; still not deployed at scale.
