Culturally, we’ve already accrued tons of legacy code and cruft (eating beef, driving cars, using gas for heat, flying in planes, cloud tech) that’s going to be difficult to refactor. We don’t need to be introducing new, non-efficient tech (Bitcoin, NFTs) to this mix.

Plus, “a more efficient blockchain” is still likely to increase overall energy consumption. (Jevons paradox)

Let’s treat all this crypto tech as “proposed but paused” until it can prove that it can be operated sustainably. You don’t test if the seatbelts work once you’re on the Autobahn.

The adoption of technology is historically is a lot closer to testing seatbelts on the autobahn than “proposed but paused.” I’m not making a value judgment, but essentially every major technological leap has had huge initial costs it needed to overcome.

In today’s context, it’s clear: that methodology doesn’t work anymore. We don’t have the luxury of “move fast and break things” (we’ve broken too many things). A looming climate crisis means everything (especially new tech) needs to be carefully considered.

It seems to me that it’s easy to decry the impact of things you don’t utilize since doing so costs you nothing. There are huge environmental costs to almost all modern conveniences, and it seems to strange to single out crypto and force it to “pause” while letting others continue

I proceed by doing my best and encouraging others to do the same. I’m in the processing of converting my yard to native plants (and have done the same in a few public spaces). I don’t consume animal products. I don’t commute. I don’t try and legislate my morality, though.

Explain more about “not legislating my morality” and how that relates to climate change.

I don't believe it will be effective to try and stand in the way of products or services people value. You can encourage people to "pause," but they won't unless someone makes them. I find it better to focus on things within my locus of control.

Do you think disparate, un-targeted actions will be enough? I’m concerned about our individual propensity to self-rationalize our behavior, actions, positions. Feels like it needs to be collective action (the same collective action that helped us deal with CFCs and ozone)

A worthy concern! But I wonder who would decide what is worth it, and what isn't. Do we outlaw all fossil fuels? Eating meat? The internet? The US govt. is terrible at prioritizing the climate (as evidenced by the war machine, and more). I trust people over power.

I've also seen incredible changes in attitudes and behavior the govt had no part in that give me hope. Eating local, gay rights, black lives matter, and many more. I believe in being the change, and when enough people do, the government tends to hop in front of the parade.
