In particular, this chart, “KfCo2 released per dollar earned,” is misleading.https://twitter.com/dontpunchansh/status/1366418493831188486 …
Not everything that can be minted, should be minted. I’m from Alberta. There, the existence of the tar sands is a “nuanced topic, with lots of complexity” (jobs, historic ties, etc). But we already knew, from the beginning, that the project would be a net negative for humanity.
Culturally, we’ve already accrued tons of legacy code and cruft (eating beef, driving cars, using gas for heat, flying in planes, cloud tech) that’s going to be difficult to refactor. We don’t need to be introducing new, non-efficient tech (Bitcoin, NFTs) to this mix.
Plus, “a more efficient blockchain” is still likely to increase overall energy consumption. (Jevons paradox)
Let’s treat all this crypto tech as “proposed but paused” until it can prove that it can be operated sustainably. You don’t test if the seatbelts work once you’re on the Autobahn.
Read @memotv’s threads.
After a ton of in-depth research:
“The figures are even worse than I thought.”
“For digital artworks to have emissions of 100s KgCO2 is bonkers.”
“This technology is simply not ready.”https://twitter.com/memotv/status/1352007633734086657 …
Also, it’s really unclear to me how it’s better than a legal document and a database.
Apparently NFT’s took @paulg's advice to do things that don’t scale too literally.
Yeah man. I was / (am?) very excited about NFT's, but the externalities involved are mind blowing. Even with this minimal amount of data, it's clear that artists participating in this are doing so will willful ignorance. Gotta be a better way. It's too much energy.
