It’s a conversation. You can’t pause one of those either. You step out, you step back in. It’s live and ephemeral, like the world used to be. Yes, I want them to offer recording/playbacks and all that, but viva starting with live, the old standby.

yes but if people think there is meaningful opportunity in the live conversation, then it necessarily puts pressure on anything that can be deferred i've missed several Clubhouse events to be with my daughter—not sure what i missed and i'm happy to, but they're gone either way

As far as listening to audio in the background - people do it all the time. If you think people are dialed-in and 100% focused when listening to podcasts, you’re giving podcasts too much credit.

The value of Clubhouse is obvious... but all of these downfalls are accurate. Podcasts, youtube, etc are much more conducive to being background noise and can also be paused or rewound if something is missed. Clubhouse is not.

So far my fave CH listen was a 3hr recording on the a16z podcast feed that I could play at 2x and pause/rewind as needed. But if CH made that native, it would dampen the FOMO-driven adoption they're thriving on right now.

As great hosts evolve their style, they'll prove themselves to be consistent producers or instigators of ephemeral content worth "tuning in" for. (People still watch livestreams, debates, and sports games live.)
