Clubhouse doesn’t feel like it should be even close to that kind of acquisition price. Facebook bought: Instagram – $1 billion Oculus – $2 billion WhatsApp – $19 billion Giphy – $400 millionhttps://twitter.com/Keith_Wasserman/status/1357697913904717824 …

If the ultimate aim is to integrate Clubhouse into Facebook's social graph, it doesn't make sense for them to buy it for $10B (they could build it much cheaper, the same way
@TwitterSpaces is). If FB truly wants to keep Clubhouse separate, is it worth buying "6 million users?"Pokaż ten wątek -
Folks keep saying "Clubhouse could monetize via paid memberships." Have we seen memberships work at a "$10B valuation" scale? The biggest player that I can think of is Patreon, and their annual revenues are currently around $35 million (valued at $1.2B). The scale seems off.

Soooo many ways to monetize it though. - memberships - events - ads may be easy actually IMO (and new format that can be better than podcasts) - more... I agree it’s risky though and 10B is too high

I’m not convinced. You only truly get a sense of how well monetization will work once it’s in place. FB could already put all those ideas in place for their existing features (video, events, groups etc) but they haven’t done much there. They’re still (primarily) an ad biz.

Your last point is the killer for me.. whilst it may currently be fun, it feels like a bit of a fad.. once people stop carving out time in their day to join in it’ll die off to a large degree. Recordings to listen back to later may be an option, but podcasts already in that space

I'd guess it's (for FB) the risk of not owning the next big social platform. As in, it actually doesn't have to ROI for them in the same way. The existential threat is worth shutting down. $10B too much to any other buyer, but makes sense for FB.

As another has said: It seems like there are indeed some healthy paths to monetization (subs, tips etc) and I can definitely see the value in a pay-wall for some speakers e.g. how Elon spoke this week... its live theater.

I think paid groups could be the first thing to monetize on Clubhouse. Though I think it’s the whole thing is just a hype and will go away.
