If you're selling anything online, pay attention to these two variables: 1. Unit economics: how profitable is one "unit" of your product or service? (one digital download, 1 month of MRR) 2. Sales volume: how many units can you sell every month?
The artists I know and talk to are indies (no record label contracts). They did best with CDs. Pretty good with iTunes. Worst with Spotify. (And now are doing “ok” with vinyl sales)

I am part of this world too, talk with artists, labels, promotors etc on a daily base and live in a house with artists too, so I know first hand what comes in for the stuff they own the rights too. That's why I know for sure that a lot of artists are not telling the whole story.

In the history of music there has been a small phase where artists made money by selling us 3 times the same (!) product (vinyl / cd / download), before that playing live was most important, after that it was. And then came covid. That is of course a big issue.

In my bass playing days we saw Spotify more as a promo tool to make it easy for folks to find our shit and buy tickets. We needed the door pay and merch sales.

But there is nothing wrong with that? Before recorded music that was the essence of music too.

All artists deserve money, but I think there's more to the story than Spotify is bad. But I will listen!

Unit economics
Think about a musician.
## She used to make:
On iTunes:
Retail price: $0.99 / track
Artist profit: $0.69 / track
## But now she makes:
On Spotify:
Artist profit: $0.007 / stream
Her profit per unit has gone WAY down.
