If you're selling anything online, pay attention to these two variables: 1. Unit economics: how profitable is one "unit" of your product or service? (one digital download, 1 month of MRR) 2. Sales volume: how many units can you sell every month?
I’m comparing monthly volume x unit earnings: - “I used to sell 1,000 tracks a month on iTunes.” - “Now I’m getting 100,000 streams a month on Spotify, but making less money.”

People buy a stream only once and keep on listening to streams. That's why you can make a lot of money via streaming over time. And that happens a lot. It's a shame that all the artists doing well via streams don't tell their stories.

If the billions Spotify pays to rightsholders don't go to the artists where does it go? To the labels. They in general are doing well. At least the majors. Artists shouldn't sign bad contracts.

The artists I know and talk to are indies (no record label contracts). They did best with CDs. Pretty good with iTunes. Worst with Spotify. (And now are doing “ok” with vinyl sales)

Unit economics
Think about a musician.
## She used to make:
On iTunes:
Retail price: $0.99 / track
Artist profit: $0.69 / track
## But now she makes:
On Spotify:
Artist profit: $0.007 / stream
Her profit per unit has gone WAY down.
