Odd to see folks advocating that Twitter should be a “government controlled utility.” So, you want to fight censorship by giving a central government control over the big social media platforms? (Personally, as a citizen, I’m more afraid of being censored by the government)

At least the government is checked by the supreme court. Who elected the tech executives and who is checking on them? Government regulated, not government controlled. Just like AT&T is.

What regulations should the government enact on Twitter if it became a public utility?

The FCC would create its own rules for Twitter’s moderation, the process for appeals, who will resolve disputes, the fines for infringement, etc. Similar to what phone companies, ISPs and the post office are subject to.

What rules would you propose they should enact for Twitter’s moderation?

The usual stuff: Can’t incite violence, no hate speech, no child porn, no doxxing, etc. But there should be a way to appeal, they should be liable for infringing, have clear process, etc. I understand this is not something to do lightly, and it hinders innovation & competition.

Got it. (I like those regulations btw!) But what happens if we get an authoritarian President who has different values in mind?pic.twitter.com/il0izcpuUK

I imagine the courts have a say (not sure), and if not, at least the president is an elected person who can be changed by the people. Not ideal, but better than the tyranny of tech execs (not their fault).

It’s funny, in countries with state-controlled media (Russia, China, North Korea), it seems people CAN’T elect someone new.

Regulated not state controlled. The US already regulates most media: tv, radio, cable, newspapers, ISPs, the post office. The time to consider certain social media platforms in that category has come IMO. At least to consider it.

I agree that we need regulation! But “public utility” doesn’t seem like the right form.
