I don’t want to debate semantics. The whole world is celebrating because the USA just ejected a clearly toxic and dangerous individual from office. It’s important that we identify him (and label him) as such. Otherwise, we’re rationalizing his behavior and the harm he’s caused

The whole world is celebrating?! 47.7% of the voters voted for him! Do you follow
@ggreenwald? His podcast w/Rogan last week was excellent on why it’s dangerous to call him such. If you dont have 3hrs to spare, yesterday’s substack was a great summary toohttps://greenwald.substack.com/p/no-matter-the-liberal-metric-chosen …1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 6 polubionych -

Fireworks all over Europe. Church bells in Paris. Here in Canada, cheers. I agree that Bush was bad (I feared him too). But Trump was also bad (in different ways). I’m continually surprised when rational people try to rationalize his leadership.https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/524962-fireworks-in-london-edinburgh-as-biden-win-celebrated-abroad …

I’m not, and I’m not defending him. I’m trying to understand why 70M people voluntarily voted for him, when they were the ones that were going to be governed by him. It’s as likely we’re ignorant on some things as they are on some other things.

Probably not my place but I know several well educated people in tech & finance who voted Trump this time around. Claiming he's authoritarian would probably make then spit out their drinks. Happy to add perspective if needed

Same. Getting to know some Trump voters opened my eyes on several things, especially on the idea of decentralization.

And Trump supporters are heavily punished in tech, so most stay silent. People will try to cancel you and get you fired even if you just like a conservative tweet, let alone explain your perspective. Look at Jack Statamic. He lost a third of his followers in an instant ... https://twitter.com/jackmcdade/status/1324789462484865031 …

... and got hundreds of viscous quote tweets and comments. So people stay silent publicly, and make themselves heard in the polling station — where it matters. Then we wonder why the polls where so wrong.

I’m not saying that Trump is “exactly like Hitler.” But he is objectively bad, on multiple fronts: climate change, science denial, racism (“shit hole countries”), covid response, destroying democratic institutions, amplifying conspiracies, sowing division and mania.

He is similar to Hitler, in that Hitler used the democratic process to gain power. Millions of people supported him. Similarly, millions of people are supporting a different kind of tyrant in Trump. I’m not discounting the value of these people; but millions can be deceived.

Our role as a rational society is to call out bad actors, and the people who support them. Obviously, there has to be limits to this (we don’t want “witch hunt hysteria”), but when a truly bad actor shows up, we need to identify them as such (and call out their supporters).

Btw - I’m making a big deal of this because I know (and love) people who supported Trump. Half my family in Ohio voted for him. But also, my Uncle (who supported Trump, and believed his early lies about the pandemic) recently died from COVID.
