Seeds almost always sprout where you've been preparing the soil.
Likewise, good ideas almost always reveal themselves in places where you've put in the groundwork.
First, find fertile ground: industries, sectors, technologies, groups, trends that are showing potential.

Ideas for good opportunities be in 2021? 1. Tools that enable individual creators to publish and monetize their work. (memberships, community) 2. SaaS that has gone "upmarket" (to enterprise) and left SMBs behind. 3. Tools/teaching that help devs do their work better/easier.

When brainstorming new ideas, always figure out: "Are people already searching/paying for this?" If they're not looking for a solution, how are you going to get them to find you?

I know you are passionate about this perspective. I agree with it if one wanted to mitigate or limit risk associated with starting new things. Many great ideas and new businesses will not fit snuggly in this definition though. Magic is often at the edges of what we know.

But isn't there always some form of "demonstrated demand?" For
@arvidkahl and Feedback Panda it was: "Remote teachers teaching English are cobbling together their own solutions." For WooCommerce it was: "People keep trying to add e-commerce to their WordPress site"1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 0 polubionych -

Of course. And that is where we have disagreed before. The jump between demonstrated demand and product that meets demand varies in length. IMO all demands / wants / needs can be abstracted to Maslow’s hierarchy. But makers sometimes stretch that to create a “new” product.

Can you give me an example of a business that fits your definition? (I suppose this is more common in B2C?)
