Startups ≠ B2B bootstrapped SaaS A B2B bootstrapped SaaS grows when it: - finds reliable distribution channels that don't cost too much - consistently gets new trials - consistently converts those trials to customers - has relatively low churn https://twitter.com/Julian/status/1306984963242209286 …
Yeah. I think my comment was mostly about how many startups optimize for user growth, visitor growth, engagement growth, community growth etc (instead of revenue).

Ah right, yes possibly in early days, though I think most SaaS once they have MRR coming in also can make the opposite mistake of looking too much at MRR vs engagement which are a bit more leading indicators (I certainly make that mistake)

You have to be careful though. I think a lot of indie businesses may stunt their long-term growth because they optimize for short-term revenue instead of engagement, so their retention is weak. This gets covered up until they plateau.

Yep though it’s tough to not optimize for revenue when you have less time/money and experience to have a feel for that balance. Having messed that up multiple times + having resources makes it easier for me to focus on activation/retention v optimizing revenue too early again
