One of the hardest stages in life is the "almost, but not yet." You can see your goal, off on the horizon, but you know that it's still miles away. You're tired, stretched thin, and starting to feel desperate. What helps? Almost always: "having more margin before you start."

I kind of want to start a fund that invests solely in folks that want to recycle "really interesting but just not quite there" post-failure startup ideas. I figure like 3 years after the first attempt failed, a regrouping and refreshed perspective will have done wonders.

It's unfortunate that margin is such a trailing indicator. You usually won't know, until you know. And then it's too late.

In 2009, Henry Worsley successfully retraced Shackleton's route in the Antarctic. Plenty of margin. Worsley died in 2016 attempting to be the first person to cross Antarctica on foot unassisted. He crossed over 900 mi but had to be rescued 126 mi from his goal. Short on margin.
