The market is unsympathetic to your passion. You can build whatever you want, but ultimately you're beholden to the market and what it wants. Without customer demand, you don't have a business.

Kind of what depends on what you mean by "demand." Eventually all "demands"end up on the hierarchy of needs. Maybe not the best, but a example: Slack -> async comms -> more efficient information flow -> better decision making -> business success -> financial stability -> food

But putting that ultimate "get out of jail free card" aside. Didn't the guy that sold screwdrivers invent "phillips head" screws and thus create a market for those screws? Also, Jello Girls (great book) talks about how they invented a food category to sell Jello.
