The market is unsympathetic to your passion. You can build whatever you want, but ultimately you're beholden to the market and what it wants. Without customer demand, you don't have a business.

Somewhat agree that the market doesn’t care about passion. Yet - individuals care about the passion of makers who create the things they buy. (You are an example.) And demand can be created from scratch. (Hard, but possible.)

Can you think of examples where demand was created from scratch?https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1301635681572196352 …

Low-alcohol beverages / brands. Or even zero alcohol replacements. Demand didn’t exist in the mainstream for either 5 years ago. (Could argue that the need was always there, but mainstream & status quo just dominated the airwaves.)

But who *created* that demand? Was it a single company? Or... was it a variety of societal factors (demographics, culture, etc) coming together to form the wave of demand?

My gut feel is that it is the latter. So the better question is possibly: Who raised awareness about a demand / need that has always existed?

Factors that influence demand: - Changes in price or supply for related goods - Government policy, investment, R&D - The ubiquity of related technologies - Evolving societal trends and tastes - Rising (or falling) incomes - Evolution in a category - Economic cycles

Agreed with all. Would also add “awareness”. Sometimes we don’t know what we want and someone comes along and illuminates that need. The actual thing will be generation-specific. But underlying job-to-be-done or Maslow’s Hierarchy will be the common denominator.

Based on that, one can totally create demand and a whole new category. Human nature won’t change so fast and our needs are primal, then cyclical i.e. somewhat predictable.

Again, I'd argue we *respond to demand that exists*. We rarely create it (mostly because it's too damn expensive and takes way too long). (*exceptions might be: huge industry lobbies that can influence government policy, and industries who take massive government subsidies)
