The market is unsympathetic to your passion. You can build whatever you want, but ultimately you're beholden to the market and what it wants. Without customer demand, you don't have a business.
Can you think of examples where demand was created from scratch?https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1301635681572196352 …

Hubspot. Inbound marketing. Can argue that the job to be done was there before, but the rest of us didn’t have words to explain it. Slack. Hybrid of real-time & async comms. Obliterated incumbents with a new paradigm & workflow.

"Inbound marketing" is a new term for an old idea.
There's been a market for that type of marketing for a long time.
Slack rode an existing wave. They weren't even close to the first company in the category. Campfire pioneered the B2B market (and before them, ICQ and AOL).

Low-alcohol beverages / brands. Or even zero alcohol replacements. Demand didn’t exist in the mainstream for either 5 years ago. (Could argue that the need was always there, but mainstream & status quo just dominated the airwaves.)
-
But who *created* that demand? Was it a single company? Or... was it a variety of societal factors (demographics, culture, etc) coming together to form the wave of demand?

I wonder how useful it is to frame as “create vs tap into existing” Can always trace demand back to some existing primal source (love, acceptance, respect, time) but many products do create a new vessel for that demand vs the exact form of demand preexisting
-
Yep, which means the most radical new ideas are just an illumination of part of being a human that we didn’t want to admit or was aware of. But the demand inherently existed sub-consciously.

I guess the question is how meta this question is. I could argue that the Internet was a demand created from scratch. Truth though is that connection (for example) is part of our DNA. So perhaps the demand was always there?

The internet was not a business!
The internet was a government-funded research project for the military (and then later, an academic research project).
A lot of innovation gets created by governments + academia, which later creates market-effects. - Pokaż odpowiedzi
