I don't like that approach, because 1 person isn't a good indicator of market momentum.

Yeah, definitely not statistically significant. But many startup "stories" start this way. Maybe it's just survivorship bias though. Like AirBnB, Slack....

AirBnB is in the accomodation market, which had tons of demonstrated demand (hostels, hotels, motels, B&B).

I mean like Slack, they built a tool to communicate inside their team, because they needed it and then showed it to others - at least that's how I remember it.

Likewise, chat apps for teams had tons of demonstrated demand: Campfire, Hipchat, etc. The category already existed and had traction.

Yes, sure. In hindsight. I'm talking about when you develop something for yourself and then see if anybody else also needs it. Maybe they did this deliberately or they were lucky. Not sure, didn't check it in detail.

I'm talking about markets, and categories, that have demonstrated demand. When you're thinking about launching a business, this is the primary thing that matters.

Ok, maybe that's too abstract for me. You have some examples? Everyone is using email, I see Hey and Superhuman and a ton of other paid clients = Build another email tool? Many use project management tools, Basecamp, Jira, etc, build this instead?

Yup. But that only works if you're already a member of a decent market.
