Big megacorps are giving small businesses the shakedown: 1. Google will sell ads to your competitors for your business name and show those above you in search results. 2. Using the Gmail API? You now need to pay $15K to $75K for annual security audits.

The playbook is always the same: FB/AMZ/GOOG/MSFT/APP/SHOP/TWTR use indie devs & businesses to build and substantiate their platform. Then, when they've gained significant distribution power and market share, they use that leverage against the people who got them there.

These massive corporations love implementing new policies that take away power from small players. There's always going to be a policy. The fact that some of you are *cheering* for Apple right now (a company that averages $1 billion in revenue per day) is just dark.

At the end of the day, I don't care *that* much about Hey. But the principle here matters. FB/AMZ/GOOG/MSFT/APP are exerting more and more control over distribution. Low-cost, open distribution is the *one* thing the internet gave indies. Without it, you can't bootstrap.

Apple makes $1 billion A DAY. If Basecamp has made a billion, it took them 21 YEARS to do it. The scale here (both in terms of revenue and power) is completely in Apple's favor. (It's likely that Convertkit will also make $1 billion in its lifetime. Why the hate for Basecamp?)

These same people are those who bitched about Microsoft's monopoly and anti-trust issues in the 90's... Like they still think Apple is the scrappy little pirate bootstrapping company...

I’m here for it. If anyone can fight the monopolists, it’s people like Basecamp who aren’t dependent on them. Basecamp has been very consistent on this and have even testified in favor of anti-trust enforcement.

If anyone is curious about anti-trust enforcement and why monopolies are bad for the economy,
@superwuster’s The Curse of Bigness is a short but action-packed page turner on the topic.https://globalreports.columbia.edu/books/the-curse-of-bigness/ …

I am very confused by this as well. Even if you don't like the Hey product or the opinionated marketing, you need a lot of cognitive dissonance to defend a quasi-monopolist randomly gatekeeping access to a significant portion of your potential customers (with no recourse).
