This is a good point: IAP really doesn’t make sense for multi-platform SaaS apps. If I’m on iPhone, and I switch to Android, what happens? https://hey.com/apple/iap/ pic.twitter.com/FLIeYQXl9o

You’re missing my point. Anytime you’re asking the customer to update their credit card, you’re dramatically increasing the chances of losing that customer.
I’m not missing your point. I just don’t agree based on (my personal) experience of shipping platforms that have faced this. If you’ve built a good service (like Hey), you aren’t going to lose customers at scale over CC.
The only time that’s an issue is when you have poor engagement.
Think of it this way:
This isn’t a fitness app that they end up not using, it’s a core business tool. They open their email, we detect they don’t have a valid payment flag, we pop up a Stripe modal window to enter a new CC, and they’re done
.
No one is paying $99 a year as a casual email user. These are technically aware people
It's not about them being "technical" or not. This is about consumer behavior: if they have to update their credit card (add new billing info), churn goes up. Higher likelihood of failed/missed payments. https://www.profitwell.com/blog/involuntary-delinquent-churn-failed-payments-recovery#:~:text=Expired%20cards,system%20within%20the%20next%20year ….
Don’t forget that unless they cancel the sub before they move over to Android, they will still have *uninterrupted* access to the platform. The subscription is associated with their Apple ID, not the app on their phone.
Unless someone is ditching their Mac and ID too it’s
...As far as the dev is concerned, they have a valid payment receipt from Apple against that users Hey ID. The fact that they’ve logged in on Android is immaterial.
