This is a good point: IAP really doesn’t make sense for multi-platform SaaS apps. If I’m on iPhone, and I switch to Android, what happens? https://hey.com/apple/iap/ pic.twitter.com/FLIeYQXl9o

Exactly! Having multiple billing profiles only creates confusion and complexity. https://twitter.com/dchymko/status/1274046110298865664?s=21 …https://twitter.com/dchymko/status/1274046110298865664 …
There was an older version of this rule that “sucked less” but at least gave devs an alternative. https://twitter.com/marcoarment/status/1273989686445424640?s=21 … https://twitter.com/marcoarment/status/1273989686445424640 …
Expired CCs would still be a problem regardless of platform. This is different. People buying Hey aren’t likely to be finding out about it through the App Store; see also Slack. It’s an industry or niche-savvy audience. I’d bet many will be small biz moving off Google.
You’re missing my point. Anytime you’re asking the customer to update their credit card, you’re dramatically increasing the chances of losing that customer.
So almost all their customers, if Hey are accurate that they don’t need Apple’s App Store as a tool for discovery, will be coming through their own payment channels.
Yes, but in this case, Apple says they can't disable IAP. So some % of customers will be able to sign up for Apple subscription... which complicates everything. Basecamp *wants* to use a single billing system (the one they have set up for their web app).
Bike shedding!
Its definitely not ideal, but not the end of the world. There is no need to cancel the Apple subscription though... Our customers can use our app on Android/iOS/Web regardless of where they purchased their sub. If the sub expires, then they'd likely renew on their new platform
That sounds incredibly un-ideal, and seems like it would have a ton of bad edge cases.
Your credit cards likely expire more often than you switch between Google/Apple. And IAP guarantees that you don’t have to worry about expiring cards. So which risk would rather mitigate? A user having an expiring card or one switching from Apple to Google?
