Waking up. I'm realizing how racist I've been in the past, and (honestly) how racist I still am. Thinking of myself as "a good guy" made me blind to how complicit I am in racist systems. It's not enough to be nice. We need to dismantle the systems that keep other people down.

White supremacy is baked into the way we structure society, the way we do business, the way we determine who is punished and who is rewarded. It defines who gets uplifted, and who gets held back. This is as true in Canada as it is in the United States. We need to change this.

What woke me up? Black people (mostly on Twitter) showing me how complicit I am in the system. Showing me that so many of society's structures are oppressive and racist. Here are the voices that impacted me (h/t

This video by
@RachRodgersEsq really woke me up. She showed me how my "safe silence" was harmful. "Being an ally means getting uncomfortable. It means risking your status and your reputation." https://www.instagram.com/p/CA1Ez5qHL6o/1 odpowiedź 2 podane dalej 24 polubionePokaż ten wątek -

@BerniceKing shook me. If I'm not willing to trade places with Black people, First Nations people, Hispanic people what does that say about the society I live in? My inaction is just protecting my white privilege.https://twitter.com/BerniceKing/status/1266730015196090368 …Justin Jackson dodał/a,

The book “So you want to talk about race” by
@IjeomaOluo has revealed so much for me already. Especially: “how we define racism matters because our definition will determine how we fight it. We can’t just fight the symptoms of the cancer; we need to fight the cancer itself.”pic.twitter.com/d8UhUsqQVm

If white people are not "working to dismantle a system of racism from which we reap the benefits" we're not really helping. We're a part of the system (we profit from it!). And we need to change it.https://twitter.com/KristinaDaniele/status/1268328087340507136 …

I’m still learning about this myself, but a few ideas: 1. I’ve spoken at enough conferences. It’s time to recommend others and give them the opportunity. 2. Hiring and investing in POC. 3. Voting against discriminatory systems. 4. Living in integrated neighborhoods.
