This whole thing is antithetical to the spirit of the open web. Remember when we wanted to index REAL information? The LEAST these platforms (Yelp, Grubhub, Google) can do is show a real phone number for a local business.

The restaurant industry needs open source. Think about how open source helped level the playing field for indie tech businesses. Every tech entrepreneur benefits from free software. Why should low margin restaurants be any different? https://twitter.com/danpriceseattle/status/1251667344155217921?s=21 …https://twitter.com/DanPriceSeattle/status/1251667344155217921 …

Grubhub is not “adding value” here. They’re taking advantage of a business sector that has razor-thin margins, and is barely keeping its head above water. They’re going to growth-hack their way to destroying the livelihood of all their customers.

App developers complain when Apple takes a 30% cut of sales. But the profit margins on software are often 80%+. Typical restaurant profits margins are 5%!!! (Grubhub charges 15-30%!)pic.twitter.com/ol4EMPnS5i

Why would anyone open a restaurant? I’ve been wondering why restaurants don’t have runway cash and I had no idea the margin was 5%. That is insanely low. At what point is it not a viable business? If they had “free” SkipTheDishes, what margins would they be left with? 10%?

Most small businesses run with low margins. If you’re an auto mechanic, you have to invest tens of thousands in tools and a garage. Truck driver? You need a rig and fuel. In tech we just live in a fantasy world where margins are high (for now).

But what stumps me is why would you start a low margin business? Or does it start much higher and then competition drives it down? Example: if I wasn’t doing tech right now, I’d get into law.

People build what they know, what they love, what they think will benefit their community. Many folks are just excited to be a part of the fabric of a town or a neighborhood.

It’s lame that they can’t make good margins. 5% is just... damn.

I think small business margins went down as the mega-corporation big-box stores and amazon invaded all the corners. And it’s tough to blame people for trying to get the best price when their wages haven’t increased in 25 years.
