Jackasses (like me) in the tech sector think we’re “super awesome entrepreneurs.” But we’re beniftting massively from open source and low fixed-costs. And, with our high profit margins, we also have the luxury of making a few mistakes! Brick-and-mortar businesses can’t.

All of you startup folks saying “just let the free market work” love to ignore all the free open-source tech we get to use to run our businesses. (Not to mention the open protocols we depend on; many of which were funded by the government and academia)

Arguably, if it weren’t for TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP, etc being free (and open) protocols, web app profit margins would be as low as any other business. Our “rents” are low because we get a lot for free. If restaurants didn’t have to pay their rent, they’d have good margins too!

There are some good actors here. Square enabled local delivery + pickup features in their point-of-sale software, and made it free for now. https://twitter.com/square/status/1240330945422602246?s=21 …https://twitter.com/Square/status/1240330945422602246 …

Don't restaurants mark-up prices vs pick-up for yourself? That's been my experience... When you add a tax to a service, the incidence of the tax falls on consumers/producers depending on elasticity of supply/demand, no? Were it otherwise, how could they afford sales taxes?

I can almost guarantee you that most restaurants are not marking up their food 30% for all Grubhub orders. Also: this is not a tax. These are the kinds of services charges that businesses feel they need to swallow “in order to compete.”

Why would anyone open a restaurant? I’ve been wondering why restaurants don’t have runway cash and I had no idea the margin was 5%. That is insanely low. At what point is it not a viable business? If they had “free” SkipTheDishes, what margins would they be left with? 10%?

Most small businesses run with low margins. If you’re an auto mechanic, you have to invest tens of thousands in tools and a garage. Truck driver? You need a rig and fuel. In tech we just live in a fantasy world where margins are high (for now).

Looks like there legit room here for another type of delivery business model. Doesn’t GrubHub also charge the customer a fee too?
