I think a big factor in success is putting yourself in a place to spot good opportunities, and recognizing the good opportunities when they come. For those of us who grew up in a small bubble, this almost always means getting out of your bubble, and exploring new contexts.

And privilege plays a big role here (again, it seems most of luck is where, when, and to whom you were born). When folks go to Harvard, they get to meet some of the most connected people in the world. They’re privy to opportunities most folks will never even hear about.

So how do us folks who didn’t go Harvard, put ourselves in a place to spot new opportunities? Well, we now have access to online communities. This might be the big leveler. If you’re curious about a sector of the economy, there’s probably an online community dedicated to it.

Starting in 2012, I joined some podcasting communities, the bootstrapper communities, the
@laravelphp community, and the XOXO community. All of those connections helped me to spot the opportunity that eventually became@TransistorFM.Pokaż ten wątek -
The
@laravelphp community in particular (especially@adamwathan and@taylorotwell) taught me how to spot bigger waves of demand than I had been.Pokaż ten wątek -
“Luck & hard work” don’t seem to encompass everything that’s needed for success. A garden needs hard work (and some luck!) to grow, but it also needs fertile ground and good seeds.

“luck raises your floor of what you can achieve but hard work helps you reach the stars.” -someone wise probably said something like this.

also, it seems to me the "will to work hard" could be considered a part of luck. Some people are capable of working harder than others due to a combination of how they're wired and their upbringing. Many people wish they were successful, but don't (or can't?) put in the work.
