A few times a year, someone will send me a message like this:
"Stick to talking about bootstrapping and business. Don't talk about [philosophy, mental health, economics, politics, ecology]."

First, my audience isn't one-dimensional. We all live in a social, economic, and political context. We have feelings, families, histories. "Business" exists within these contexts. If my ideas about business are divorced from their human context, how helpful are they really?

Business is profoundly affected by the outside world. Politics, natural disasters (and our response to them), economies, societal beliefs: all of these things affect markets. So if you're a "business person," you should care about things not related purely to business.

I started a business so that I could be more meaningfully involved with my community, family, and environment. Business is a means to an end. It's a tool humans invented so we could have better lives. Why not talk about what that "better life" could look like?
