I think the scarcity research suggests that without basic needs met, no one looks past it. But I don’t think the research suggests the opposite- that meeting basic needs automatically turns people into long term thinkers. I’ve not seen that to be true.

You don’t think this study proves that point? “Neuroimaging results suggest that a scarcity mindset affects neural mechanisms underlying goal-directed decision making.” Meaning, we’re able to engage in goal-oriented thinking when our needs are met.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6575633/ …

Being able to doesn’t mean people do. That was my point.

I’m skeptical of this thinking Chris.
I’ll keep digging for more evidence and get back to you.
(Anecdotally, for myself this has proven true)1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 1 polubiony -

I guess for me anecdotely the reverse is true. And this is merely observation, but if immediate needs were met then why don't you hear of more professional athletes who struggle in early life becoming long term thinkers? Sure some are but there certainly are more that don't

Here's some pretty hard evidence of needs being met but not becoming long term thinkerspic.twitter.com/v1N4IEjDJR

There is a huge difference between being able to pay the mortgage, afford transportation, and to comfortably save for retirement, and becoming a multi-millionaire at a very, very young age, living the first decade of your life in la la land, then jumping off the merry go round.

The point
@mijustin is making is that you have very little opportunity to think long term until you are safe, just as maslow taught us. That doesn't mean you WILL for sure, it just means you are far more likely to.1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 2 polubione

Totally get that! And I agree with you. Needs met mean that you now have the opportunity to think long term. Doesn't mean you will though but one can hope!
