Someone asked me “how can we promote long-term thinking in our society?” Initially I was stumped, but now I think I have a good answer: “Provide for people’s basic needs first.” When folks are worried about their health and livelihood, it consumes their day-to-day thoughts.

A few years ago, I was really depressed. I’d never been depressed before (I’d previously thought depression was something “weak people” experience). My depression was debilitating. It resulted in me making way less money which, in turn, made me way more desperate.

I would wake up and spend the whole day thrashing, trying to make money so I could survive. I didn’t think about the future; I was consumed by my need to survive. As soon as I started making more money, my desperation subsided. I started dreaming about the future again.

I’m lucky: one of the big reasons I survived my depression was my access to public health care. Early on, I went and saw my family doctor and she helped me work out a plan for getting better. (I also paid for a therapist, which was massively helpful).

“Creativity’s biggest enemy is desperation.” This is my post on 2014. It over-emphasizes “rugged individualism” but it describes the research on the cognitive affects of “money stress” in more detail:https://justinjackson.ca/desperation

This line of thinking I get behind 1000%. But I don't think it's the norm.
