Someone asked me “how can we promote long-term thinking in our society?” Initially I was stumped, but now I think I have a good answer: “Provide for people’s basic needs first.” When folks are worried about their health and livelihood, it consumes their day-to-day thoughts.

I would wake up and spend the whole day thrashing, trying to make money so I could survive. I didn’t think about the future; I was consumed by my need to survive. As soon as I started making more money, my desperation subsided. I started dreaming about the future again.

I’m lucky: one of the big reasons I survived my depression was my access to public health care. Early on, I went and saw my family doctor and she helped me work out a plan for getting better. (I also paid for a therapist, which was massively helpful).
