Consumption is not broken. Good luck convincing a non-tech folk the benefits of a podcast app/format over just simply listening to a YouTube stream.

Blogs and Youtube are actually a good guide for what needs to be done with podcasts. Blogs/YT disaggregate the collection into posts/episodes that can be shared as links, shown as recommendations, searched etc. Whereas the podcast experience is wedded to 'shows' still.
