Common advice: “Just put in the reps.” “Just show up every day.” In practice, “put in the reps” won’t work if: - your fundamentals are bad - your desired outcome is unrealistic Doing more of “what’s not working” is not a good strategy.

Yes. I think we need to distinguish between “taking initiative” (getting started) and “putting in the reps.” It’s taking initiative that gets me to the gym that first time. But, hopefully, I’m doing the right exercises (with reasonable form) almost immediately.

I agree with everything you’re saying, by the way. I’m coming at this from the angle of packaging the advice such that it’s useful to the right person at the right time.

“Show up every day, but make sure you’re headed in the right direction” is objectively correct, but saying those words in that way to a beginner will produce paralysis in 90% of cases (because of the “right direction” part). They should first optimize for STARTING.
