Two people giving conflicting advice, whose SaaS products have performed comparably well over a roughly 2 year period: @mijustin and @arvidkahl
Arvid says build for a niche which he did. Justin says build for a big market which he did.
What’s the takeaway?

Yep! I was so confused by the different definitions of niche, main dish, side dish that I can’t even decide which “side” I’m on. Is
@hostifi_net a niche main dish or a big market side dish? Somebody let me know lol@mijustin@arvidkahl@tylertringas2 odpowiedzi 0 podanych dalej 1 polubiony -

That is exactly the right question. As long as we define niches purely by size and not by other attributes (like homogeneity or interconnectedness), we will end up with definitions that are conflicting yet true. Maybe I'll do some more research into this, it's very interesting!

I remember your IH quick chat from a while back. From what you said, it was a general product, pivoted & niched down, then expanded into a bigger market again, is that correct? Maybe "niche" is also always a point in space AND time :D

So in some ways we’re the main dish in a niche.
@hostifi_net is the #1 provider of cloud hosting for these 2 specific free apps (like@wpengine does for WordPress). Or, we’re the side dish to go with @ubnt products, a broad market being it is a $1B/year company.1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 1 polubiony -

Funny how it's an almost arbitrary matter of perspective. Well, I think you're doing a great job :) So whatever dish you are, as long as it feeds the right people, it must be good.

I think
@jdnoc with@ClosetTools at $17K MRR and growing is a great example of successful niche + dessert instead of broad + main dish. I’m not convinced that this example is the exception either, I think@hostifi_net is niche dessert as well. Hard to measure of course though.1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 3 polubione -

I think it depends on access to the customers. If you're targeting a specific niche, but have no way of getting in front of your customers, you're going to have a hard time. Also, growing markets trump all. The ability to grab new customers that haven't heard of alternatives.

Also also, smaller niche apps tend to be built on-top of an existing behemoth. Gmail apps. Slack apps. Chrome extensions. Broad market apps tend to stand alone and carve out their space in the market as an individual product.

Yup, I used similar examples in my piece.

True,
@hostifi_net (Ubiquiti) and@ClosetTools (Poshmark) would fall under the Exception described now that I think about it.2 odpowiedzi 0 podanych dalej 2 polubione -
