Feels like ancillary products are often a lot simpler to build and therefore more bootstrapper friendly.

Simpler to build, yes. And, that might be a good place to start. But, in most “value chains” there are 1-2 players who suck up most of the value (the main dish). Example: You might have a fancy new CMS, but for most people that’s an appetizer. It’s web hosting they pay for.

It is a very good read and thx for that! Very helpfull for ppl like me who want to bootstrap their (futur) SaaS product.
Could I ask what do you use for the old paper style on the image background ?

I read it yesterday & I found a recent use-case yesterday as well. So I run & wanted shoes. I bought Nike’s even though they were expensive. And the sales guy was trying to sell me socks, t-shirts, shorts, etc… as well but I didn’t buy them because they were too expensive.

They weren’t as expensive as the original shoes but still a lot expensive. I think that was because my main use-case for running was shoes. So I don’t mind if they are really expensive. But everything else is secondary. Like a desert. Anyways great blog post. Made me think.

Dropbox is an odd “exception” I’d argue they’re still an appetizer of the cloud storage market. But their VC-funding has given the the runway to try to expand multiple times unsuccessfully. 2013: Mailbox 2014: Carousel 2015: Paper 2019: HelloSign 2019: Dropbox Desktop

Is upscribe a good example for your argument here?
@joshuaanderton definitely started very niche (Medium forms) and expanded from there. Kinda depends if the first two phases were total failures or was building revenue/audience along the way -
I'm trying to thing of some recent bootstrapped success stories that went straight at the "main thing" out of the gate, w/o getting a toehold in a niche, and were successful...?

The article was awesome, however as a French I was confused why anyone would only eat an entree. Only to learn that this word means different things if you in NA or in the rest of the world
