I agree, though for different reasons than people usually name. Finding a peer group that is interested in the same things as you gives you people to learn from and be challenged by. It's one of the big benefits of college, but has been replicated elsewhere.

There is often a sense that "networking" is transactional and that the benefit is people who will help you easily move to the next stage/a new role/etc. Maybe that's true in rarified echelons, but I have never found that to be the case. Instead it's something to help you grow.
