The "conventional capitalist" in me knows that "if your business isn't growing, it's dying." BUT... The burgeoning ecologist in me knows that our planet can't sustain perpetual economic growth.

On a micro-scale: "How much MRR is enough?" is a silly question, because, in our current global economic model, your business has to keep growing (or it will eventually die).pic.twitter.com/wtDTRAPAsM

But on a macro-scale, our economic system relies on perpetually increasing: - resource extraction - population growth - energy usage (Not sustainable)

You’re missing the thing that actually makes this work in the end: Innovation and technology. Without those, the planet wouldn’t be able to feed much more than a couple of million folks. The more sophisticated we become, the less resources we need :)

Except, this doesn't appear to be true, in practice: https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/09/12/why-growth-cant-be-green/ …pic.twitter.com/StJaPQhOMj

I don't think they are talking about the same thing as I did. We might also fundamentally disagree on this
There's a cost to having humans on the planet obviously, but my point is without innovation we would have run out of "growth" a very long time ago.2 odpowiedzi 0 podanych dalej 0 polubionych -

It seems like we are becoming more efficient, but overall consumption is still higher than the planet can withstand. It feels like all we can do is "cause the least amount of harm possible" and hope for the best.pic.twitter.com/b3HzvZNeGt

It's the "higher than the planet can withstand" part I don't buy. A lot of people who's said this historically has been wrong... IMO that part is an ideological / political discussion though, so we might fundamentally disagree, and then Twitter is... suboptimal :D

Yeah, I don't really know either. I'm just trying to ask myself the hard questions.

Yeah! For me it's also a strong urge to try to be an optimist, but without being ignorant... But it's not easy! For sure.
