You can easily link to a podcast, but (unlike video and web articles) they won’t be consumed immediately. On the web, a steady stream of links to your article / video generally increases your audience. But that technique doesn’t help podcasts as much.

A podcast listener has to cross a greater threshold than someone reading and article (or watching a video). Deciding to listen to a podcast is a commitment; you want to know that it’s going to be worth it.

It’s possible that podcast discovery will never have as much throughput as discovery on YouTube, Netflix, etc Google search *might* change this, but I’m skeptical. Podcasting is just a slower medium.

Apps had a single marketplace (the App Store); one place to search for, and discover, new apps. Podcast discovery is spread across multiple directories and apps (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Search, Podchaser, PodHunt, Podyssey).
