Slack went into public beta right when 37Signals announced it was sunsetting Campfire so it was a no brainer for existing Campfire users. It was also much more feature rich, even then.
I think there’s a lot more to Slack’s success that can’t be explained logically. At the time it was being rolled out, I was in San Francisco and I remember at every event, everyone was talking about Slack, Product Hunt, and Secret. It was hype.
This was my first time in SF and I’d never experienced so much hype around products. At every event, people would have long conversations about these products. There were obviously a lot of products being launched at the time, but those were the ones people were talking about
I think you could argue that Slack has become the thing people railed against (email). When it goes down, look at the “...I can now get work done” comments. BUT, for the purposes of your conversation, you make some very good points.
