“How disappointed would you be if you could no longer use this product?” Startup folks use this question to determine if their product (or a competitor!) has product-market fit. If 40% or more reply that they’d be “very disappointed,” you’re thought to have product-market fit.

Great thread. A better question is probably "What would you do instead if you could no longer use this product, and how often would you have to do that?" If people tell you about a manual process that they would have to do frequently, that's a good sign.

I would frame it differently. Don't ask what they would do. People try to be consistent with how they perceive themselves: "Being a foodie/movie buff, I would..." Rather ask what are the implications if this product wasn't around anymore.

It’s true that humans are bad at forecasting future behaviour which is why when they answer that question they are actually saying how much they’d be disappointed now, which still makes this question a reliable indicator.
