To me the lesson of 1,000 true fans is it often takes a lot less customers to hit your goals than you think. Example
Pagerduty: >$100m in revenue, 11,000 paying customers. ~10 years old, $170m in VC, netting 1,100 new customer per years = IPO
Slack’s real super power is its per-user billing model. 3 million paid users! That’s a lot of expansion revenue.pic.twitter.com/tgkhW4QtNC

Kevin Kelly's hypothetical band's real super power is its per-item pricing model. It's actually 10,000s of individual CDs, t-shirts, concert tickets and bumper stickers from just those 1,000 fans

Haha. Oh god. If you’re referencing my post, i’m not actually against the idea that “1,000 fans/customers” can build a legitimate business. Rather, it’s the idea that “the internet is big, so any niche you choose will do.”
