I wonder if the rise of podcasting is due in large part to people not wanting to listen to their own thoughts.

My prediction is podcasting actually starts leveling off and shrinking a bit soon. Most podcasts are listened to by commuters to work. And remote work just keeps gaining traction.

don’t tell me that
I think we’re still far from saturation.
Podcasts compete with listening to radio or music. People do that everywhere: in the car, on the bus, while walking, doing the dishes.
There are 36 million YouTube channels, and only 700k podcasts. Lots of room.1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 10 polubionych -
Doesn't mean I don't love podcasts. But I fear the two main use cases: commute and car driving. Remote work kills commute. And once cars are truly autonomous I think the growth in on demand audio will actually switch to video (people eyes will finally be free to be distracted)

This is also a long term prediction. Doesn't mean I also wouldn't bet on more audio growth in the short term. But also see an even hotter future for video than it is now when commutes are dead and autonomous cars are here.

There’s also a possible future where people abandon video because it’s too consuming. Audio has an advantage here: you can listen to something mindfully. You can look at the world around you. You can be in nature. You can close your eyes.
