I wonder if the rise of podcasting is due in large part to people not wanting to listen to their own thoughts.

Doesn't mean I don't love podcasts. But I fear the two main use cases: commute and car driving. Remote work kills commute. And once cars are truly autonomous I think the growth in on demand audio will actually switch to video (people eyes will finally be free to be distracted)

This is also a long term prediction. Doesn't mean I also wouldn't bet on more audio growth in the short term. But also see an even hotter future for video than it is now when commutes are dead and autonomous cars are here.

I think we’re still far from saturation.
Podcasts compete with listening to radio or music. People do that everywhere: in the car, on the bus, while walking, doing the dishes.
There are 36 million YouTube channels, and only 700k podcasts. Lots of room.
