I’ve been in critical condition for the last few weeks. I’m in the hospital with kidney failure. I had no response to the first several days of dehydration treatment with IVs, then began swelling uncontrollably. My hands looked like carrots.

My lungs filled with fluid and I could only breathe with a CPAP machine, which forces air into the lungs. To prevent escalating to intubation, I had an emergency surgery for a central venous catheter placement. We did it live in the PCU, local anesthesia only.

I wasn’t going to make it through the night, but that janky central line allowed us to start dialysis. I was moved to the ICU and did dialysis immediately. Took 3 liters of fluid off. It’s tiring and very cold, but it absolutely helped. I’m doing more tomorrow.

At this point, I don’t know if I’ll recover, or if I’ll need dialysis for the rest of my life. They biopsied my kidney but the results are inconclusive right now. It may or may not heal itself. All I can say is I’m here, I’m surviving, and I’m ready to accept any outcome.
