Finding great guests is at least half the battle. Having the kind of convo that fits with the particular guest and allows them to shine is also crucial. Neither is easy. I'm still trying to figure this stuff out. And then there's noise. Sometimes ppl are tired, distracted, etc.

One of the great things about being a creator (as opposed to, say, a live performer) is you can toss bad stuff. You don't have to release anything that's not great. But damn is it hard to throw out an episode that a busy person you respect took the time to record with you.

I find and listen to interview podcasts based on guests or topics. Not based on shows. I think that’s the way they should be looked at.

Shows like Exceptions from
@jayacunzo make me wonder if the raw interview style is tired. Unless the interviewer is amazing (e.g.@longform), I now tend toward podcasts that drill into one idea, and use the interviewee to inform/inspire it. Much more consistent spark. -

Agree most (esp marketers) put the onus on the guest. But really the onus is on the interviewer. If a guest isn’t charming or human or interesting, that’s not their fault. It’s ours. (Editing is also key. Terry Gross/Guy Raz do 45-min shows but interviews are 2+ hrs.)

I’d add that a regular listener is also more forgiving when an episode doesn’t stick. They have an affinity with the host and some guests, even ones the listener is excited about - don’t work.
