Thinking out loud here:
The size of the platform you target is a big multiplier for how successful your business will be.
Example:
"My niche is Facebook ads"
"My niche is Shopify stores"
"My niche is PHP developers"
"My niche is foodies on Instagram"

Oh dang. Just read this after posting this: https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1098998442683117568?s=21 … Hadn't heard of
@stratechery's "ladder strategy." That's a good way to put it.

App Store was built on iPhone (and earlier work done by Palm).Pokaż ten wątek1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 4 polubione -

It's the way a lot of people think about disruption: 1. Go after a niche market that the dominant player can't/won't cater to. 2. Gain leverage in an aspect of that market (better tech/network/etc) 3. Expand until you're eating the big players' lunch.

But even those "niche markets" are often just subsets of bigger platforms.

“Email Marketing for Bloggers” wasn't going to be ConvertKit’s positioning forever, but that niche helped them carve out space to grow. Use your time focused on one niche to discover a bigger market where your experience in that niche is valuable.

I think the positioning was key, but building on other folks' platforms really helped fuel their growth.

Absolutely. I'm just trying to say that the size of your initial niche isn't a cap on your success. You can find escape velocity to grow beyond your initial platform.
