Arguably, most tech businesses are built off someone else's platform: - Indie Hackers was built off Hacker News. - Airbnb was built off Craigslist. - Most podcast businesses are built off Apple Podcasts. The internet itself was originally someone else's platform (U.S. Gov)

We like to think that entrepreneurs are building something out of nothing, but that's almost impossible. You're always building on top of something. General Motors, for example, benefitted greatly when the federal government started publicly funding freeways.

Certainly, every high growth business seems to be built on someone else's platform. iPod was built on of MP3 and Napster. iPhone was built on iPod, Blackberry, and device subsidies from cell carriers. App Store was built on iPhone (and earlier work done by Palm).

Agreed! But it also depends on how much folks in that niche are willing to invest in products/services that you are offering them. I learnt that the hard way.

Yes, its called the total addressable market (TAM). Essentially the question, if every person in my "nieche" becomes my customer, how many would that be? And then as a boostrapped company I estimated if winning a one tenth of a percent would give me a sustainable business.

"Be niche" sounds like specificity - smaller is better, right? While the above sounds like bigger is better? Is it a mix?

That's the thing I'm trying to unravel a bit. "Target a niche" has become cliche internet business wisdom these days, but it seems that the platform you build on is just as important.

The real magic is in leveraging your initial addressable market into something bigger.pic.twitter.com/zD2KytixuG

Oh dang. Just read this after posting this: https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1098998442683117568?s=21 … Hadn't heard of

Thinking out loud here:
The size of the platform you target is a big multiplier for how successful your business will be.
Example:
"My niche is Facebook ads"
"My niche is Shopify stores"
"My niche is PHP developers"
"My niche is foodies on Instagram"
