As a kid of the 90s, I had to leave my computer on all night in order to download Quake (8 MB) on a 14.4 modem...
So the idea that I can download an 8 GIGABYTE file in ~4 minutes is insane.

4 minutes?! Who has that kind of time?!

Why is the fibre so slow is my question

That's the speed of my connection.

Those DSL and cable figures are pretty low, are they meant to represent real speeds from 15 years ago? ADSL2+ here delivers 15-20Mbit, and cable consistently delivers 90-110. Uploads, on the other hand, are still tragically slow.

I do also have fond memories of my 4Mbit DSL in Vernon back in the early BCTel “internet gateway” days where they were partnered with Internet Junction

In 1991, you couldn’t even buy a hard drive with 8GB. More like 40-130MB. Industry progress. Hard drives now can write 130MB/s. I remember how big a deal it was when i bought a 5gb drive in the 90’s.

I used to have a tech magazine ad which touted walmarts 2TB data center. I now have an 8TB san at home in the closet. Times change. Wish i could find that ad though. Had my neighbor in it.

And that’s why I decided not to be born until ‘98
