The easiest way to see if you're part of the new wave is if you get flack for challenging definitions. In music: "that's not techno" In food: "that's not real cuisine" In museums: "that's not art" In cinema: "that's not film" In tech: "that's not a startup"https://twitter.com/thepatwalls/status/1064038048000667648 …

I think people critique when they see something odd or out of place, not when they feel threatened, and that's normal, because things draw attention. Some of these new/odd things might succeed (like the ones you mentioned), some might fail. It's not a matter of "threat".

It's not ALWAYS a matter of threat (because it sometimes is)*

Self-projection! this’s what I see with those comments on reddit!

Spot on, I remember the hate against Tony Hawk making trick based skateboarding big. Also very similar hate against
@Pendulum in the Drum 'n Bass scene when they were the first ones to make DnB popular -
If you listen to some of the early Pendulum stuff it was raw DnB. Then they changed direction slightly and got a lot of hate. Shame. Was a DnB DJ for many, many years so remember the hate too

I think the 24h challenge is a great thing, and what people are building in that time is impressive, but the term “startup” is pretty loaded to begin with.
-
My experience has been people call something a startup for attention/validation (myself included). What’s wrong with “app”, or “side project”? Or “business”? It’s because it’s not hypey enough, whereas “startup” is exciting to people for some weird reason. I’ve done it myself.

Justin, you could not have been more accurate here. I see it all the time. People want to keep you down when they fear you will or have already done great things they are unable to do.
