It's 2018, you have a great idea for a software business but you need to spend 6-12 months of full-time to build, launch & get traction.
Your options to fund it are:
* VC
* Life savings
* Rich relatives

* Credit Card Debt
* Shark Tank

G) Have customers pay for it. It's 2018. Serious, you can build a software business using Google Sheets and obfuscate it way by doing manual work. Take profits and reinvest into building the tech. No one technically-minded wants to do that because its hard, not impossible

Lately, I'm seeing less and less truly bootstrapped ("only use revenue from customers to grow") software products that go the distance. The exceptions seem to be products started by young nomads. They have a very low cost of living. (Many are single, with no family, or mortgage)

Probably true. But I think the only market force that is driving that is access to cheap capital.

I personally think a lot of “bootstrappers” have no knowledge of sales or marketing. Building a product is hard, getting customers is too. Hard to be good at it all.

True. The bigger point is that if bootstrapping is "only funding your growth from customers" that means: a) It's going to take awhile to hit a scale where you can pay yourself (it took Basecamp 2 years) b) For many folks, not getting paid for months (or years) isn't realistic
