Don't get me wrong, the movie is excellent. But the book takes care to explain what the movie doesn't: namely, how Westley manages to best Inigo, who is after all the greatest swordsman in the world.

Spoilers from here on out, obv. Okay, so the book and the movie both follow the same basic plot of the duel - the conversation, the dual "I'm not left handed", et cetera. But the book does one thing differently that the movie can't do. In the book, the fight lasts a *long time*

Westley is able to best Inigo not because he's a better swordsman - he's good, very good, but Inigo is unparalleled - but because he pulls Inigo into a false sense of security and Inigo thus wastes too much time putting him away because the duel is fun for him.

When Inigo does the blade switch, he does it because he's getting tired, and he figures it's time to end it, not realizing that Westley was also self-handicapping (because he knows Inigo's rep). When Westley switches in turn, Inigo is now tired, but the younger Westley isn't.

This, incidentally, also plays eventually into Westley's battle of wits with Vizzini, where Vizzini deduces how Westley defeated Inigo and Fezzik EXACTLY wrong: stating that Westley beat Inigo with skill and Fezzik with strength, when in fact Westley did exactly the opposite.

The movie is better, but the book has its moments.
